How to convert a FAT32 disk to NTFS

You have a USB stick or an external hard drive in FAT32 format and want to convert it to NTFS to skip the limit of 4 GB for a single file. Or, you want to go from NTFS to FAT32 for compatibility of this file system with most operating systems. One way or the other, here's how to do it without loss of data.

FAT32 disks can not store files larger than 4 GB. If needed, you can convert them to the NTFS file system to avoid this limitation without conventional formatting that will result in the loss of your data.

The process is very simple and you will avoid formatting the disk if you have no other space to perform a backup beforehand. And even if it was possible to perform a backup, you might not want to engage in an annoying process that would lead you first to copy your files to another drive, perform NTFS formatting, and then recover. again the same files.

The conversion of FAT32 to NTFS is easily done under Windows through a simple command line. But before doing so, it is important to note that this step is irreversible following the same process. In other words, it is not possible to convert the NTFS file system to FAT32 using this command line.

To switch from FAT32 to NTFS:

  • In the file explorer, note the letter assigned to your volume (USB key or external hard disk). For our example, it will be the letter G.
  •      Open the command prompt (type cmd in the Windows search bar, and validate)
  •      Enter the convert G: / FS: NTFS command. Replace the letter G with the one on your support and press Enter.
  •      All you have to do is wait a few minutes while the conversion is done. As soon as it is finished, a message will tell you.
Converting the FAT32 file system to NTFS without formatting is therefore quite easy on Windows. However, there is no gateway from the NTFS file system to the FAT32, or at least without third-party partition software that has this functionality. This is the case of the Macrorit tool and AOMEI NTFS to FAT32 Converter.

Convert NTFS to FAT32 without data loss

Start by downloading and installing the Macrorit NTFS to FAT32 converter tool. It is free and easy to use. Launch it once installed. It should display any internal or external storage devices that have an NTFS file system.

Just choose the desired disk and then click on the "convert now" button. Then wait until the end of the process and you're done.
